Devil’s Peak Table Mountain

On Sunday the 17th of March 2019 at 18h51 the Peninsula Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) was asked to assist when a caller requested help after he and his wife became disorientated while hiking along one of the routes on Devil’s Peak in the Table Mountain National Park.

The visitors from Saudi Arabia were in a section of the mountain which overlooks the Cape Town City Bowl. A team of Rescue Mountaineers as well as SANParks Visitor Safety Patrollers were placed on a precautionary standby. The foreigners were routinely contacted via cellphone where information and a picture of  a map was relayed to them. They were able to use these updates to locate the zig-zag Saddle Path leading down to the Tafelberg road.

On reaching the road, the hikers managed to walk in a northerly direction to the Lower Cable Station where they boarded a taxi to their accommodation.

WSAR would like to commend the tourists for calling the rescue services when they felt uncomfortable with their progress along the route, especially since the light had already started fading.

WSAR urges the public to please:-

  • join the Hikers Network or the Mountain Club of South Africa who regularly have guided walks in the TMNP
  • make use of a professional guide for an exclusive hiking experience
  • not walk in areas that you are unfamiliar with
  • carry a Peter Slingsby map
  • hike in areas that are well frequented by other hikers

Call 021 937 0300 or 112 for any wilderness or mountain rescue response.
