Table Mountain Cape Town
On Wednesday the 14th of November 2018 at 13h34 WSAR was activated by the Western Cape Emergency Medical Services (EMS) after receiving a call for assistance.
A hiker in the Platteklip Gorge route on Table Mountain was unable to proceed any further as a result of fatigue. Our EMS Metro Rescue Advance Life Support Paramedics responded to the Lower Cable Station to meet up with members of the SANParks Visitor Safety Patrol unit, who accompanied them to the Top Table via the Cable car.
From the Upper Cable Station they quickly made their way over to the Platteklip Gorge, and after the rescue party had descended along the route, they came across the female hiker who was located about three quarters of the way up in the gorge, in the shady section near the summit. She was suffering the effects of dehydration and the necessary care and treatment was administered by our medical responders.
The rescue party then slowly walked the female to the Upper Cable Station where they had boarded a Cable Car to be safely delivered to the Lower Cable Station at Tafelberg road.
After no further assistance was required, our rescue teams stood down on this call and the female departed via private transport. She was however advised that in the event of her condition worsening, to immediately report to a medical facility.
We once again would like to commend the Table Mountain Arial Cableway (TMAC) for their valuable assistance to our rescue teams and our patients, which they are prepared to deliver at the drop of a hat, at no cost to WSAR.
We urge the public to please:-
- carry at least two liters of water or other suitable drink per person
- consider rather doing short walks in the early morning or late afternoon
- rest as often as is necessary
- remember that weather conditions may at any time disrupt the cable car service
Please call 021 937 0300 or 112 for any wilderness or mountain emergencies.
