Knysna Fires 2017 – Assessing the Damages in the Aftermath

Following the devastating fires that took place in Knysna ravaging the town and those surrounding it, destroying vast tracts of land and infrastructure a comprehensive assessment needs to be done

In a joint operation led by the Incident Command Post, involving multiple organisations including Wilderness Search and Rescue, an accurate assessment of the damage caused by the fire is being carried out. WSAR has sent a team of 9 vehicles who form part of our Logistics Support Unit to assist with this task. Each vehicle is staffed with Medics from Metro EMS and a Chainsaw operator. After a thorough briefing each vehicle departs to a designated area to log and collect data which is then fed back to the ICP giving authorities the best opportunity to assess the extent of the damage.

In order to ensure seamless communications between the crews out in the field and the ICP, radios connected to a repeater network have been sponsored and a joint collaboration between Omnipage who provided the radios and Hilbert Electronics who supplied repeater access.
