Jonkershoek – Pieke – Two lost Hikers extracted by Skymed

Around midday On Saturday the 4th of February 2017 the Cape Nature manager for Jonkershoek had a call from two students who had slept in the mountain on Friday night. This morning the Jonkershoek mountain was under cloud and while on their down they got lost.  In the process they got stuck on a ledge in the vicinity of The Pieke. They made the right choice and called the reserve manager. WSAR deployed a whole team who upon receiving a location pin from the stricken men, could not believe that it was correct. Our team proceeded to study the area with binoculars until they spotted the stricken students. Our team reckoned that they would be able to reach the students within two hours. In the meantime Skymed finished a transfer of a patient from Worcester and it became available. Skymed arrived and took on two technical rescue operatives. They then flew to the mountain and lowered the two rescuers.  The two students were hoisted out and flown off the Mountain where after the helicopter returned to collect the two rescuers. The rescue of the two, who were not injured, was completed shortly after 16:00.
